and speaking of rachel bilson...

I'm not obsessed (ok, maybe a tadbit but not as bad as you're thinking!), but when looking through fall clothes inspirations for my last post, I stumbled upon a wedding which Rachel Bilson helped design with designer Brian Reyes. She designed the bridesmaids dresses for the wedding of Jill Stonerock and OC creator Josh Schwartz - and yes, is even wearing one herself! Now, it took me a while of looking at them to know how I felt, but I decided that I really do love the way the different shades of greens go together. I wouldn't have thought to add that mossy green one in, and yet, that is the redeeming colour in my opinon! What do you think? (if you click on the pics, you can see them alot bigger)

miss you mommy bloomer

What to say...today marks the 5 year anniversary of our Mommy Bloomer's passing. It was a big year, lots of emotions with the two weddings, birthdays, announcements and odd daily musings that make you pick up the phone to share with her before you realize she is gone. 5 years is a long time, but there still hasn't been a day that has gone by where she was not in my thoughts and I am forever grateful for this ability to keep her so close. Whether its a pillow I bought at West Elm that reminds me of one that she had on her couch, the way I hang the blanket over the armchair with the same purposeful carelessness, the certain spice I know she added to her lasagna and the way I find my hand curled on my lap exactly like the way hers did...she sneaks into my thoughts and my every day life keeping her memory always alive.

For the weddings, both completely different but both completely wonderful, she was definitely a driving force in most of the design choices. At the circus wedding we used the antiques she collected and lovingly finished throughout her life, the collection of doilies that rivals no other, and the part of the property to get married on by the gardens and trees that she planted with weddings in mind. And then the Israeli beach wedding, covered with bougainvillea - her favorite flower - and the colours "aqua and orange" which are just a modern way of saying "seafoam and peach" which was definitely her favorite colour palette as you could attest to our family home before our recent re-design! She was definitely as close as she could possibly be on those days and I am so grateful she left so much of herself behind for us to feel close to.

Once I wrote to Oprah and Nate asking how to re-decorate our house without losing the essence and memories we cherished most about her. Sadly, it didn't happen, and as much as we would have welcomed Oprah and Nate to our home, I know we learned more in the process of doing it on our own. We learned more about her, created new memories with her and learned how to keep her as close as possible in our every day lives. I guess we have more to offer Oprah in the future so I'm glad we didn't have our Oprah moment yet!

We don't get the chance to talk to her any more, to curl up on a couch together and laugh about the silly things that made our weird minds tick, but we still share that love for beauty, design and her ability to always swim against the current. She is definitely the Original Bloomer and we look forward to many more years of keeping her memory alive in our work.

We love you Mommy Bloomer! Thank you for everything you taught us...we will make you proud.

grey and red

I stumbled upon this gorgeous dining room on a blog called Martha Moments, which highlights Martha Stewart stuff. It's a pretty cool blog actually. Remember my post on grey hardwood? Yes, well this is grey wood to the max - on the walls even. I was struck by the red accents in contrast - especially the glassware and dishes on the table. Joelle Bloomer is one step ahead of me though, as she's working with these colours on an event to come in November! Oh, and I dig the black light fixture over the table as well...

non frou-frou wedding dresses

I saw these wedding dresses from Saja on 100 Layer Cake last week and fell in love! These are just my style - pretty, simple, and elegant. Non frou-frou! And I'm not planning to have another wedding either, Shayna Bloomer, but if I did, I might just want to wear one of these lovelies {the prices are pretty great too!}.

Have a wonderful weekend!

the royal conservatory...pretty!

Yesterday Joelle Bloomer and I had the chance to check out Toronto's newest event venue, The Royal Conservatory. It sure was yummy! I love how they went with a very modern, minimalist design that leaves it open to any kind of event decor! Finally!!! Do you know how long we've been waiting for a venue to finally get with it?!

Surrounded on three sides by glass, lovely creamy floors, and the original outer wall of The Royal Conservatory, I just can't wait to get my hands on designing an event there...oh the possibilities!

If I were getting married a third time {but I swear I'm not!} I would totally do it here!

This original outer wall of The Royal Conservatory is now part of the entrance way leading into the lobby. I loved how they had musicians playing on the small balconies! And take a look at the patio balcony that overlooks the quiet, treed courtyard in the pic below!

This is the main floor of the lobby but there are actually three different levels leading out of the theatre. If I were going to get married a third time {but I swear I'm not!} I would have my ceremony on level 2 and then hold the reception on this main floor.

One of the yummiest parts of the nights was this lovely spicy hot chocolate treat from Soma! Miss Cuppie...I think I rate this a 5 out of 5!

miss cuppie has a taste test! first stop: flour

This Bloomer has become Miss Cuppie for the next few weeks! I thought it would be a fun {and delicious} adventure to taste test at some of the wonderful cupcake shops in Toronto, and then report back here. Fun idea, hey? For my inaugural taste test, I chose a charming little shop at Eglinton and Bathurst called Flour which intrigued me with their wares: cupcakes, cakes and flowers...a bloomer's dream combination! And a clever store name too.
Flour is adorable and beautifully decorated with sweet little touches. It was very difficult to choose a cupcake to taste test, as there were so many good ones! As a cocoa addict, I chose a chocolate ganache cuppie. You just can't go wrong with ganache.

Score card:
Visual appeal of cuppie = 5/5 blooms
Eatability {was it easy to eat or did it fall apart and crumble down the front of my new jacket} = 5/5 blooms
Cuppie tastiness = 5/5 blooms
Frosting tastiness = 5/5 blooms...it's ganache
Loveliness of store = 5/5 blooms
Unexpected extra = you can pick up some fleurs while you are there! Also it looks like they make lovely wedding cakes too.

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that we'll be seeing a lot of 5/5 blooms on this adventure?! Stay tuned for Miss Cuppie's next taste test, coming soon...

breast cancer awareness month

As you may or may not know, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October. We lost our mother, The Original Bloomer, to breast cancer 5 years ago this October 13th so obviously it is a cause close to our hearts. D. sent me these pictures of Rothschild Avenue in Tel Aviv. Rothschild is one of the main avenues running through Tel Aviv and is always really beautiful with its wide walk/bike lanes running down the centre with big, shady trees overhanging the path. In honour of BCAM they decided to light the whole street pink in honour of this crazy, rotton disease. Its really gorgeous! I really wish it had been lit up like this when we were there last month...my mom {being the Original Bloomer and all} would have loved it...totally her kind of thing!

rachel bilson: an autumn fashion inspiration

The other day we were looking for some fall fashion inspiration and we found it in Rachel Bilson - our favourite style guru. And I decided, dressing like this might make the cooler weather feel fun after all! The word on the street is Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen are building a new farmhouse in Uxbridge, our home town. Looks like we might want to consider frequenting Uxbridge's local coffeehouse a little more often!

the pink concert {and i love my hubby's job}

My hubby P. works for a sports and entertainment company in Toronto which means plenty of last-minute free {or cheap} tickets to concerts and hockey games. Yippee! On Wednesday afternoon, I got the call that he could get four tickets to the Pink concert that night. And so, on the spur of the moment, the Bloomers and our friend Meredith headed to the concert, only to find that our seats were right at the side of the stage, within tattoo-view of Pink. Yippee #2! The concert was amazing and truly entertaining...and that girl has pipes! I think Pink is one of the very few pop singers who can actually really sing. And she is incredible live. Her version of the Bohemian Rhapsody was insane! Check out some of the pics - including Pink giving half of a peace sign. I didn't realize I captured this moment until I got home!

I promised a long time ago to keep you abreast some of my favourite boutonniere inspirations. I like a quirky bout, I'm not going to lie....

saving the lilies

So, on Saturday night, the Bloomers decorated a wedding at the Boulevard Club. It was lovely - there were tall white calla lilies everywhere! (yes yes, pics coming as soon as we get them back). I went for a sleepy late night 1 a.m. pick up of all our decor stuff, and mostly everyone had left the building, sadly leaving all the beautiful lilies for garbage. So I saved them! Mission Save the Lilies indeedy. At 2pm, I was lugging them all upstairs, with the help of my new "Friends" neighbour (thanks Aliya!), cursing the lilies, until we dumped them into the lime green bucket in my kitchen. And they looked soooo lovely just sitting in the green bucket against the grey kitchen wall! Who would've thought just a green bucket of calla lilies could be so satisfying?!

special jewellery

My friend Darlene makes the most amazing jewellery ever, and I just have to share it with everyone! We met a few years ago when her company, Bijouxbead, donated a necklace to The Breast Darn Show (a fundraiser we planned and designed to honour women with breast cancer), and since then, I've seen her jewellery take off to the moon! In fact, no word of a lie, Monika Schnarre wore a Bijouxbead necklace to the Toronto International Film Festival just a few weeks ago (see pic below). I love the pics of her jewellery above (taken by photographer Max Wellander) - these photos really do Darlene's detailed and intricate bead work justice. So beautiful - I would gladly wear her stuff any day, all day...sigh. I also think her jewels would be perfect for a wedding party. Brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, take note!
